Periyar (Thekkady) in Kumily district is in the state of Kerala. Known for Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads across 777 sq km of which 360 sq km is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake. Periyar sanctuary has about 35 tigers and leopards. However, sighting a tiger in Periyar is a fortune for one out of thousand. The park encompasses a 26 sq km artificial lake and is the home of sambars, wild boars, elephants and antelopes which can be occasionally seen on the banks of the river during a boat cruise. Periyar, otherwise, blessed by Nature has enormous tea, coffee, pepper and cardamom plantations.

Climate: Periyar - Thekaddy has tropical wet weather. Monsoon arrives in Kerala in mid June and the entire Idukki district gets plenty of rain from mid June to September and again from October to December. Average temperature during summer March to June remains high of 28°C and low of 20°C. Winter December to February records high of 25°C and low of 10°C.

Important Tourist sites : Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary - 4 km from Kumily bus stand. Regular boat cruise services from 0600-1800 hours each day.

Kumil - main town and plantation area. Shopping centre for local handicrafts and spices.

Murrikaddy - 5 km is another Spice centre. Cardamom, coffee and pepper plantation.

Pandikuzhi - 5 km from Kumily, a picnic spot and scenic. Provides ample options for day hiking in the forest.

Mangla Devi Temple - 15 km : The ancient temple is hidden in dense wood at top of the peak at 1337 m above sea level. Panoramic view of the valley can be seen atop the hill.

General: Periyar is a green forest and rain forest. Blessed with nature, it grows Tea, coffee, spices in abundance. Ayurveda is also key feature in Periyar and almost every hotel has Ayuveda centre. Other activities include Bullock cart, elephant rides and safari, bamboo safari, jungle trek, spice garden visit, boating on lake Periyar for wildlife.


By Air:
Cochin and Madurai are the nearest airports. Cochin is well connected by air-route with most of the cities in India as well as on international routes.

On domestic network, Cochin (Kochi) has flights to and from Ahmedabad, Agatti, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Calicut, Mumbai, Trivandrum and Visakhapatanam.

By Train:
Kottayam is the nearest rail head which has train connection with Cochin, Trivandrum, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Kasargod and Chennai.
