Jaipur


Jaipur was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1627 who rules from 1699 to 1744.  Amber was its initially capital, 11 km from Jaipur which was later shifted to the centre with expansion of the city and growth of population.  Maharaja Sawai Singh II had keen interest on Astronomy, Mathematics and Astrophysics.  Using his knowledge and Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Brahmin Scholar, the city was designed and constructed with 7 strong fortified gates, two state buildings and palaces.  In 1853, the Princes of Wales visited this city.  In his welcome, the entire city was painted in pink and since then, the city is popularly known as ‘Pink city’.

Climate :

Jaipur has a semi-arid climate.  The summer period extends from April till September with highest temperature recorded in the month of May and June around 45 degree C.  Average day temperature during summer hovers between 25-30 degree.
Winter months are November to February with day temperature remaining between 15-18 degree and night temperature between 8-12 degree.

Important Tourist sites :
Amber Fort, 11 km from city  centre; City Palace (residence of erstwhile Royal family), Hawa Mahal, part of the city Palace, Albert Museum and Hall, Ram Niwas Gardens, Birla Mandir (Laxmi Narayan Temple), Jaigarh and Nahargarh Fort, Galtaji; Jantar Mantar (Observatory), Zoo, Sisodia Rani Garden, Jal Mahal are the prominent tourist attractions in Jaipur city.

General :
Jaipur being the capital city of Rajasthan, it is the most advanced city of the state. There are good number of education institutes, hospitals, impressive heritage buildings, Palaces (converted into luxury hotels), colourful bazaars.  Rajasthan as such, is the most colourful and vibrant state of India.  Jaipur is also famous for hand-made jewellery, carpet, hand-printed fabrics, block printing, camel leather foot wears,  mirror work.  The city witnesses many cultural events and festivals, the notable ones are Gangaur, Elephant Festival, Teej and Kite Festival.  Rajasthani and Hindi languages are widely spoken. 

Travel :
By Air : Jaipur has a very few international flights at present.  With the new international airport, more flights are expected to land here.  On domestic network, Jaipur has connectivity with Delhi, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jammu, Nagpur and Srinagar.

By Train :   Jaipur is well connected on train network with rest of India.  There are daily trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahemdabad, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kotah, Sawai Madhopur, Agra, Varanasi, Chandigarh, Jammu, Banlgaore, Chennai and several other cities.

By Road : Delhi (260 km), Agra (235 km),  Bharatpur (180 km), Ranthambhore (185 km), Ajmer (130 km), Pushkar (143 km), Jodhpur (350 km), Udaipur (410 km), Chittorgarh,(380 km), Shahpura (220 km), Mandawa (160 km), Bikaner (333 km), Samode (43 km), Sariska (110 km), Neemrana (138 km).
