Hassan, has an area of 6814 dates back to the 11th century. The Hoysalas ruled Hassan from 11th to 14th century and their capital was at Dwarasamundra (Dwaravati-pura). the ruins of which are still to be seen scattered round the town of Halebidu or Halebid also written as Halebeed.

Hassan is most famous for Belur and Halebid temples. The two temples with intricate carvings and sculptures are located 17 km from each other.

Hassan has pleasant weather round the year. The summer months record a high of 35⁰C and low of 20*C. Winter months are not cold either. The high of 31⁰C and low of 20⁰C is recorded as average temperature. Hassan gets plenty of rains during monsoon, around 700 mm each year. The average in past 10 years is relatively high though.

Important Tourist sites :
Halebid, 27 km from Hassan is most impressive for its awesome profusion of endless sculptures on its walls depicting images of gods, goddesses, animals, battle fields. The 12th century Hoysaleshwar temple was never completed besides 86 years of workmanship.

Belur, 17 km from Halebid – the Channekeshava temple’s construction being in 1116 AD. It was built to commemorate the victory of Hoysala’s over the Cholas.

Sravanbelgola, 17 m high monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali is an important pilgrimage centre for Jains. Once in 12 years a special ceremony is held here when the 1000 years old statue is anointed with milk, honey, curd, ghee, saffron etc.
