Darjeeling

Darjeeling nestled in Eastern Himalayas in the state of West Bengal is most famous for its tea plantation, views of the mountain and Himalayan Train that runs between Siliguri to Darjeeling. Its development started in mid 19th century with British setting up their military Depot. It was gifted to British by Sikkim Kings. Prior to that till early 19th century, the region was in control under Bhutanese Kingdom and Sikkim. After 1947, it was merged as part of the state of West Bengal including neighbouring town Kalimpong. There are several Himalayan zones surrounding Darjeeling from a distance. The view of the World’s third highest peak Kanchanjunga (8590 M) and the highest peak Mount Everest are visible on clear days.

Climate :
The months of December to February are the coolest when night temperature drops to around zero degree. Days are pleasant with average temperature of 14°C. Summer months record highest of 27-29°C. It rains almost 4 months in a year in this region. July and August record the highest rainfall and disrupts road and train links.

Important Tourist sites :
Tiger Hills, the highest point in Darjeeling for excellent views of the snow clad mountains, Japanese Peace Pagoda, Tenzing Norgay Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Zoological Park, Ghoom Monastery, Tibetan Self Help Centre, Dhirdham temple are few important tourist places to visit. Tea slopes around Darjeeling extending to Kurseong form the integral part of Darjeeling.

GENERAL :
Darjeeling is a popular hill station. It is flanked by tourists in heavy numbers during the months of April to June. It is also popular tourist destination for foreigners and Buddhist pilgrims. Darjeeling, combined with Sikkim and Bhutan is the most popular programme.

TRAVEL :

By Air : The nearest airport is Bagdogra, 88 km from Darjeeling. Bagdogra has daily flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati. Druk Air of Bhutan also operates flights to Bagdogra once or twice in a week in low/high season.

By Train : New Jalpaiguri is the main station at a distance of 90 km from Darjeeling. The station has regular train services from Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati and some other southern states.

By Road, : Bagdogra( 88 km); Siliguri (80 km); Kalimpong (51 km); Pemayangtse (75 km); Jaldapara (112 km); Dooars (120 km); Kurseong (29 km); Phuentsholing (Bhutan) (200 km) and Kolkata (662 km)
