Bikaner was founded by Rao Bika in 1486, the second son of Rao Jodha.  As per tradition, the title of Maharaja is given in privy purse to the first son only.  Therefore, Rao Bika decided to establish his own city and moved to Bikaner in 1472.  From its small origins it has developed into the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. The Ganga Canal and the Indira Gandhi Canal are the main source of water for cultivation of crops such as mustard, cotton, Groundnut, wheat and vegetables. The city of Bikaner lies in the northwest of the desert state dotted with many sand dunes. It is also known as camel country as the best riding camels in the world are found and trained here at Camel Breeding Farm.

Climate :

Bikaner’s location being in the middle of the Thar desert, has a variable climate.  The summer months of May and June can turn very hot, with day temperature exceeding 46 °C and winter nights in January record below 5 °C .  The average temperature during summer records between 28 to 42 °C and in winter it remains between 5 to 24 °C.

General :
Rajasthani and Hindi are the primary languages spoken in this city.   Bikaner was an important stop in ancient time for trading between Central Asia and Gujarat Coast.   From that period, there are several beautiful havelies with frescoes. The most famous one is Bhanwar Niwas (now a heritage hotel)

Junagadh Fort, the best maintained Fort in Rajasthan; Laxmi Niwas Palace and Lallgarh Palace (both now hotels), Karni Mata Temple (popularly known as Rat Temple at Deshnoke), Moolnayak ji Temple, Lakshmi Nath Temple, Bhandasar Jain temples with beautiful paintings and mirror work, Camel  Research and Breding Farm and Dunes dotted on the outskirts of the city.
