Alleppey


Alleppey or Alappuzha is a coastal town in central Kerala.  Also known as Venice of East, on one side is the Arabian Sea and the other side are the maze of backwaters.  The intricate network of canals on backwater connect Alleppey to various regions in kerala such as Changancherry, Kottayama, Kumarakom, Cochin, Thottappally, Kollam, Trivandrum. The history of Alleppey is immemorial.  .  Kuttunadu, one of the Talukas of the district was known from the early age of Sangam era. From 9th to 12th century, the district flourished under the rule of Cheras.  It was referred by Marco Polo as Venice of the East in late 13th century. During the 16th century, Portuguese had a dominant role in the politics and development and several churches were built.  The European had established themselves in the 17th century after Portuguese moved to Goa.  19th century saw the major development in Kerala under British rule.

Climate:
Tropical weather, humid most of the years except for winter months.  Winter is mild and average temperature ranges between 25-27⁰C.  Summers are dry and humid and temperatures rises to 37⁰C during the months of April and May.  Monsoon is heavy during June to September and light during October and November.

Important Tourist sites :
Kuttanad region, known as bowl of rice, cultivated below sea level, Alappuzha beach, Ambalapuzha temple, Arthunkal Church, Chmpakulam Church, Chavara Bhawan believed to be 400 years old, Mararikulam Beach are the prominent places of tourist interest.  Alleppey is also venue for important boat events held on the backwaters on Vembanad Lake.  The most significant is Nehru Boat Race held in the month of August every year.

General :
Malayalam is the main language of the state of Kerala.  Staple diet is rice and rice made dishes, vegetables, seafood.  The industries associated in the district are Coir, Coconut and tourism.  Tourism is the lifeline of several thousands.  Houseboats also known as Kettuvalam or Rice Barge have become the most popular attraction for tourists.  Cruising and staying night on the backwaters on one of the Houseboats provides excellent opportunities to explore the backwaters and settlement of locals on the banks of the lake.
