Allahabad


Allahabad, also known as Prayag and Triveni is one of the 7 holiest cities of Hindus.  The name Prayag means confluence and three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Saraswati meet here.  Allahabad is also one of the venues for Kumbh Mela which is held every 12th year when millions of devotees throng this place for worship and holy dip in the water of Ganges.  Allahabad name is also associated with 7 out of 14 Prime Ministers of India who were born here. These are Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru,  the first Prime Minister of independent India, Lal Bahadur Shasti, Indira Gandhi, Guljari Lal Nanda, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandre Shekhar.  The most famous Bollywood Star Actor Amitabh Bachhan also belongs to this place. The city got its name in 16th century from Mughal Emperor Akbar as Ilahabad, literally means city of God. etc.

Climate:
Like most of north Central Indian cities, Allahabad has summer months of April to June with highest temperature between 42-45⁰C and lowest of 28-32⁰ C.  July to September is monsoon period when temperature drops but humidity level goes very high.  The winter months of November to February are cold.  The lowest average temperature in winter is around 10⁰C and highest of 22⁰C.  Some exceptional years have recorded low temperature of zero as well during winter period.  Fog during winter is a very common feature.

Important Tourist sites :
Allahabad is primarily a destination for Hindu pilgrimage.  It falls nearly on route from Khajuraho to Varanasi.  The places to visit are Triveni Sangam, Anand Bhavan and Jawahar Planaterium.  The building with unique architecture built during the rule of Mughals and British are All Saints Cathedral, Muir College, Allahabad High Court.  New Yamuna Bridge was constructed post independence and is a fine example of modern Indian architecture.

General :
Hindi language is the most common, spoken in Awadh dialect.  About 85% of population is Hindus, 15% is Muslim and the rest are Sikhs, Christians and Buddhist.  The industrial growth has not been very rapid in the past.  Recent developments are three Thermal Power projects.  Besides, Fertilizer industry is one of the biggest in India.  Other industrial units are of Glass and cable. 

Traveling to Allahabad :

By Air : Air India has daily flight from Delhi and Kanpur.

By Train : Allahabad is very well connected on train route with other cities including metro cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad.  Besides, several other cities have train services to Allahabad such as Agra, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna, Amritsar, Jhansi, Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur and many others.

By Road : Allahabad is on National Highway 2 and 27.  The distances to some important cities are
Agra (433 km), Ayodhya (167 km), Chitrakoot (137 km), Delhi (643 km), Varanasi  (125 km), Khajuraho (294 km), Luckow (204 km)
