The states of south India differ entirely from rest of the country.  Not only the language, tradition, attire but also demography, building architecture, climate and culture varies distinctly.  South India includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.  

The state of Andhra Pradesh lies in the southeast.  Hyderabad as its capital, the state is best known for IT industry, Tobacco, Krishnarajasagar Dam and Balaji temple at Tirupathi.  Hyderabad has some of the imposing structures, namely Char Minar, Salar Jung Museum, Chowmahalla Palace, Golconda Fort, Falaknumma Palace, Bangle Market, Hussain Sagar Lake. 

Tamil Nadu lies at the southern most edge on east coast.  Chennai, the capital has emerged as fast growing IT industry.  Chennai serves as gateway to Tamil Nadu – the state has best of temple architecture in entire India.  Imposing temples with high gopurams dominate the landscape.  The most impressive temples are in Tanjore, Madurai, Trichy, Chidambaram, Kanchipuram and Rameshwaram.    Tamil Nadu is also known for hills of Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal.

The state of Karnataka bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu in south, Andhra in east, Maharashtra in north and Goa in west was a princely state.  Bangalore (Bengaluru) the capital city is hub of electronic and information and technology industry of India.  The state has three principal geographical zones: the coastal region of Karavali, the hilly Malenadu region comprising the Western Ghats and the Bayaluseeme region comprising the plains of the Deccan plateau.  The Hilly Malenadu region keeps the climate cool and pleasant. The hilly area of Karnataka extends from Bandipur Forest Reserve to Nagerhole to Coorg and Chikmaglur.  The northern part of Karnataka is arid and rocky.  The temperature in that region is usually warm.

The state of Karnatka has a vast potential for tourism. The reserve forests are rich, green and its vast expanse houses rare species of wildlife, flora and fauna.  The important reserves are Bandipur, Nagerhole and Dandeli.  The imposing palaces in Mysore, temples of Somnathpur, Belur and Halebid, world heritage site in Hampi, Badami, Patadakal and Aihole  are masterpiece in architecture. India’s highest waterfalls – Jog Falls is in Karnatka. Serene beaches and lush green tea, coffee and spice plantation in Nilgiris and Chikmaglur and natural beauty of Coorg – often called Scotland of India adore the state.

The state of Kerala which forms southern end of India in west coast is one of the greenest states in India.  The state is gifted with nature.  The northern part of Kerala has rain forest extending from Waynad to bordering state of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka; beaches of Bekal, Calicut, Marari and Kovalam, backwaters that extend from Trivandrum to Calicut.  The state is equally rich in tea, coffee and spice plantation mostly found in Idukki districts.  Munnar, Periyar, Kottayam are best known for rich natural resources, water falls, wildlife.  The fascinating backwaters of Kerala have attracted millions of tourists.  Kumarakom and Alleppey region are the best to cover by Houseboats cruises.   Kerala has also several cultural centres that preserve the ancient heritage and art of the state.  Kathakali, Theyyam, Mohiniyattam are some of the forms of dance art.  Kalari – the martial and self defence art is still practiced widely in several parts of the state.   Elephants are most important part of several festivals that are held in the state.  Trichur Pooram is the biggest event that is held annually in Trichur, north of Cochin.  Kerala is also most famous for Ayurveda.  The science of healing thru Ayurveda massages and treatment for rejuvation and chronic diseases using rare herbs are found in the hilly areas of Kerala and Karnataka.
