Fair and Festival

India a country of different caste and creed has endless number of fairs and festivals that are celebrated across the country.  The fairs and festivals are related with different aspect of life, religion and belief.  Some of the festivals are sponsored by State Tourism body for promoting the tourism in the state.  The festivals vivid in nature highlight faith and trust of communities towards religions and rituals from centuries.  The religious festivals are determined by the Temple authorities and dates are finalised according to Lunar system.  Some of these festivals are purely domestic and celebrated at home such as Raksha Bandhan (typing of a thread by sisters on brother’s wrist for long life and brother’s vow to protect and help sister in all needs), Karva Choth (married girls and ladies keep whole day fast for long life of their husband) and many more.  Other festivals are celebrated in communities such as New Year, Harvest Period, Lohri, Holi (festival of colours).  Many others are purely related with Gods and Goddess such Ramlila – theatre staged for 9 days from epic Ramayana, Janmashtmi – birth day of Lord Krishna etc.  In south India, most temple festivals are celebrated with pomp and show where caparisoned elephants and cultural programmes, drum music etc.  Elephants worshipped as Lord Ganesh – son of Lord Shiva play an important role in festivals held in South India, specially Kerala.

All these festivals have something in common – a very large participation by the folks, cultural programmes, colourful attire, songs and dances, gaiety and joy, cultural heritage of the  state and deep devotion towards temple deity.  A list of some of the important festivals held is displayed on our website.
